LABORATORIUM LINGKUNGAN DAN BANGUNAN PERTANIAN (LBP)

Makna dari Lingkungan dan Bangunan Pertanian (Farm Structures and Environment) tidak terlepas dari makna masing-masing kata tersebut, yakni ‘Structure’ (Bangunan) dan ‘Environment’ (Lingkungan) yang diaplikasikan dalam bidang pertanian dalam arti luas.  Dalam hal ini Bangunan (structures) mempunyai pengertian: “Structures, to an agricultural engineer, means buildings, including the equipment and facilities in and around them. An understanding of structures starts with knowing the loads imposed on them.  All decisions made during design, selection, and construction, and all decisions made on appearance, durability, cleanability, etc., are made within the limits of supporting expected loads.

Sedangkan pengertian Lingkungan (environment) mempunyai pengertian: “Environment means surroundings – all those materials and conditions that surround and effect us.  Environment control includes more than ventilation or temperature moderation. It includes building surfaces and their temperature, roughness, wetness and cleanliness, noise and other stress-producing influences; waste management, health care, and accident-free facilities; handling methods and processing system; and the effects of these factors on quality” (Structures and Environment Handbook, 1987). The quality of the environment in agricultural buildings includes such factors as temperature, light, moisture, air quality and movement, dust, odours, and disease agents. Environment affects plant or animal comfort and health and ultimately production. It also influences the quality and longevity of stored products. From an engineering standpoint, environment can be closely controlled.

Pengertian atau definisi bangunan pertanian secara fisik adalah semua bangunan dengan berbagai macam, tipe, dan strukturnya, yang dipergunakan atau diaplikasikan dalam proses produksi di bidang pertanian dalam arti luas, meliputi bangunan untuk produksi tanaman (greenhouse) dan produksi ternak (livestock housing), bangunan untuk penanganan pascapanen dan penyimpanan (crop handling and storage), bangunan untuk penyimpanan alat/mesin dan perbengkelan serta aneka bangunan pertanian lainnya.  Aspek lingkungan meliputi lingkungan mikro dan makro yang mempengaruhi kenyamanan, produktivitas dan masa simpan suatu produk seperti suhu, kelembaban, cahaya, kualitas udara, ventilasi, bau, hama/penyakit dan sebagainya.
